The National Foundation of Civil Society (NFCS) supports people and organisations whose activities strengthen civil society, democratic participation, and community life in Estonia. Our work is guided by the understanding that a resilient, inclusive, and democratic society depends on active citizens, strong organisations, and cooperation across sectors.

Below we outline the main groups we support and explain why their role is essential to civil society development.

Civil Society Organisations

We support civil society organisations that act in the public interest and contribute to social cohesion, participation, and democratic values. These organisations provide spaces for people to organise, express shared interests, and address societal challenges.

By strengthening the capacity and sustainability of civil society organisations, we help ensure that they can operate independently, engage diverse groups, and act as credible partners in society.

Communities and Grassroots Initiatives

Local communities and grassroots initiatives play a central role in building trust, solidarity, and cooperation at the local level. They are often the first to respond to local needs and challenges and are key drivers of community resilience.

We support communities in developing their capacity to organise, cooperate with local authorities, and create inclusive environments where people feel connected and empowered.

Active Citizens and Community Leaders

Active citizens and community leaders are often the driving force behind social change. Their initiative, commitment, and leadership help turn ideas into action and bring people together around shared goals.

We support individuals who take responsibility for community development and civic engagement, recognising that sustainable change often begins with motivated and capable people.

Young People and Youth-Led Initiatives

Youth participation is essential for the long-term vitality of civil society and democracy. Young people bring new perspectives, creativity, and energy to civic life, but often face barriers to meaningful participation.

We support youth engagement and youth-led initiatives that promote inclusion, equal opportunities, and active participation in community and societal processes.

Organisations Promoting Inclusion and Integration

An inclusive society depends on the participation of people from diverse linguistic, cultural, and social backgrounds. Organisations working with newcomers, minorities, and underrepresented groups play a crucial role in strengthening social cohesion and mutual understanding.

We support initiatives that promote inclusion, integration, and equal participation in community life, helping to create a society where everyone has the opportunity to contribute.

Cooperation with Local Governments and Other Partners

While our primary focus is on civil society actors, cooperation with local governments and other public or private partners is essential for achieving lasting impact. Effective collaboration helps align local needs, public services, and civic initiatives.

We support cooperation models that bring together civil society, communities, and public authorities to develop shared solutions to societal challenges.

Why This Approach Matters

We believe that civil society is strongest when people are empowered to act, organisations are capable and sustainable, and cooperation across sectors is based on trust and shared responsibility. By supporting a diverse range of actors, we contribute to a society that is more participatory, inclusive, and resilient.

Our approach reflects Estonia’s commitment to democratic values and recognises civil society as a vital partner in addressing societal challenges and shaping the future.
